Today was a great day for my physical activity. I was able to squeeze in a short run this morning, 2.75 miles, with my miles under 10 minutes. It’s been a while since I’ve ran. I’m always on my board these days. Today I didn’t have my board and I know that I need to keep up with my variety of workouts. I love to run, even when I’m hurting. I expected it to hurt after a 10 day break.

My kids have asked me to go to the gym on Mondays. They LOVE the playspace at 24Hour Fitness. I kept my word today, but I wasn’t in the mood to do any more cardio or weights. Instead I decided to try something new, not really new, but haven’t done it in a very long time. I have a client that is a SERIOUS swimmer. She LOVES the open water, but prefers it to be jellyfish free. She tells me the amount of time she spends swimming and it’s incredible. She’s so strong and has inspired me to get back in the pool and try swimming again. I was on the swim team in High School. So long ago…don’t ask. 😛

When starting out in any new physical activity, everyone needs to modify their form and technique to get the best push without feeling discouraged and frustrated. In my head before I started my first lap I thought I would be able to pull out 3 freestyle laps at a time. My goal was to do 10 minutes of steam room (my favorite and never miss an opportunity to steam), then I would do 3 laps of freestyle and switch back and forth between the two. Well, that wasn’t exactly my ideal level. One lap of freestyle kicked my ass! I don’t like it when that happens, but it makes me more determined to keep practicing. So I changed up my goal of 3 freestyle laps (25 meters) to 3 laps but only my first lap would be freestyle, 2nd lap I would drag arms and only work my legs. For the third lap my legs were dragging as I did breast stroke. I was able to complete the 3 laps, minus 1, and did that 4 times. I’m really happy to say that I swam a total of 550 meters today. Maybe not all once, but I will be doing this at least once a week to add in another awesome workout to my week. I love a good challenge.
